Petition: Stand with Temp Workers at Target Field

We, the undersigned, stand with Target Field temp workers who have been organizing in their workplace for better working conditions. We join their calls for management to meet with them to discuss ways to improve the challenges listed below so that next season is better for workers at Twins games. We also urge Minneapolis elected officials to pass policy that ensures our city labor standards match our modern workplaces and address these challenges facing workers in Downtown Minneapolis at Target Field.

  • Fair Schedules with Adequate Advance Notice: It is not uncommon for us to get a text the morning of a game asking us to come in to work later that day. This extremely short notice of work, sometimes just one hour before we’re expected to be at Target Field, makes it impossible for us to make plans that allow us to have a second job or take care of our families.

  • Standing in Line for Hours: To make the lack of advance notice even worse, when we come to work, we’re required to wait in a line outside Target Field for hours with no guarantee of work. Not only is standing in line an unfair way to treat us, but it’s also not right to waste so much of our time.

  • Credit Card Payment Fees: Unlike many workers, we don’t get paid via a check or direct deposit, but instead receive debit cards with our pay loaded on them. These cards waste our money by charging fees for things like taking out cash. We need payment that doesn’t cost us money.

  • Low Wages: Because we are employed by temporary agencies that are classified as small employers, we are often paid as low $7.25 per hour - $1.75 less than the $9 minimum wage other employees are paid.

An injustice to any is an injustice to all, and if it isn’t addressed individually, it becomes a global injustice as well. “You can’t struggle with the man’s house (mansion) using the man’s tools”, Audrey Lourdes, “be the change you wish to see in the world”, “the root of all oppression lies in (supposed) science”, Gandhi. Remember, if responsibility isn’t exercised, its Siamese twin sister, freedom, will wither, like an unused muscle as well; now, sadly, because of self-possession, it needs to be exorcised before it’s exercised. No one must be conned by the corporate structure’s convolution, divide and conquer only works on the divided, life is indivisible, as your potential is illimitable. reality

Businesses everywhere are increasingly using temp agencies to avoid wage regulations and worker protection laws (safety, etc) . This is especially unjust at publicly- financed facilities like Target Field! Our city, county and state must act to halt these unfair labor practices at Target Field – and beyond; ending temp agency abuse is one piece of an agenda for racial (and gender) employment equity. Glad NOC and others are pressuring for change.

I am urging Target Field Management and the Minneapolis elected officials, specifically Mayor Hodges to meet with these Target Field Temp Workers. It is incomprehensible and beyond an embarrassment to democracy with whats happening to these citizens. What democracy, what so called “liberal/progressive city” allows it owns citizens, neighbors to be treated in such a manner. Speak up, Mayor Hodges.

“A community is democratic only when the humblest and weakest person can enjoy the highest civil, economic, and social rights that the biggest and most powerful possess.”

We as a society are truly under a new kind of slavery: politically set economic slavery designed by the rich to guarantee their success at OUR expense. the rich, the publicly traded corporate conspiracy is simply converting southern plantation, good old boy slavery into a smoke and mirror fraudulent ponzi scheme focused on everybody not included in that long lasting aloof rich circle of affluent criminals who for over a century have manipulated OUR government representative to bend the laws to intentionally favor but a few. Protests are necessary and like in Oregon, revolution against unfair, unknown, incomprehensible laws must be crushed by force. anything less is like pissing on a forest fire and promising the world “we have the problem under control”.. We have been lied to for over 40 years and the federal and State governments have used the laws to give the rich more at our expense. Why do we the people have t0 take minimum wage, unfair, right to work laws, green card employment attacks and higher taxes, less freedom and pay for millions of illegal immigrants and new Syrian immigrants and PAY for it. We should be demanding congress take a 50% pay cut immediately to pay for all immigration that sets aside workers rights, reduces our ability to find work that pays no less than 30% of what the CEO earns in salary and bonus money, money the loyal workforce earned and deserves. Do not expect ANY kind of Loyalty or trust if you treat us like dogs for we will attack, bite, and eviscerate your management plan your filthy lying HR scum and bring the pain of trust to your level of sr. management. Provide humane, fair, mutually agreeable work requirements or we will use our economic combined strength to flatten your market, weaken you ability to provide service and reduce quality and revenues because we already know you will can us all in time for cheaper labor or to pay the CEO and financial liars big raises. you don’t trust us and we hate you for disrespecting our good will and desire to contribute.

I think it is a bit ridiculous for an employer to pay via a debit card. I think there should also be a campaign to make that practice illegal. So in conjunction with getting paid on a debit card, these hard working people have to include debit card fees in their budget. This doesn’t make sense and I personally don’t understand why people just don’t boycott and close that place down. Who cares if they have falling profits. Target Field would probably listen to your needs then if they want to stay in business. I know this is all easier said than done. Sending positive energy and innovation for this battle.
